Destination marketing organization (DMO)
Updated
A destination marketing organization (DMO) is the body that promotes a city, region or country to visitors. Tourist boards and convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) are both types. How DMOs are set up and paid for differs by market:
- US: most money is public. A 2022 Destinations International post put public sources at 92% of destination organizations' revenue.
- UK: in England, VisitEngland's Local Visitor Economy Partnerships (LVEPs) "lead, market and manage" their destinations. The program came from the government's response to an independent review of DMOs, the de Bois Review.
Example: a regional tourist board promotes its partner hotels and attractions to travelers in its main origin markets.
